The catastrophic bushfires of 2019-2020 had a significant impact on the native flora and fauna. 1.5 million ha of land was burnt with most of this being native vegetation. The impact on the native fauna was severe and concerns for welfare was high. Gondwanan Ecosystems Management (GEM) worked with Far East Victorian Landcare (FEVL) to develop a landscape scale camera monitoring project to assess native and introduced fauna presence and abundance. With data collected over 2 years we were able to identify trends in native and introduced fauna recruitment and spread. We also were able to identify rare species that were thought absent from the area, so by the end of the project FEVL had a large database of fauna detection and camera images that could be used to allay post fire welfare concerns and be used encouragingly to show the presence of rare and threatened species!
